You need a password manager. These two are free, open-source, and audited. Here’s how to choose.
Bitwarden — Cloud-Synced
Unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, synced via Bitwarden’s cloud. Browser extensions auto-fill. Mobile apps work offline. Passkeys, TOTP, and emergency access included. The free tier is all most people need.
Choose Bitwarden if: You want sync without thinking about it.
KeePassXC — Locally Stored
Passwords stay on your machine in an encrypted database. You manage sync yourself (Dropbox, Syncthing, USB drive). Browser integration, TOTP, and YubiKey support included. No cloud, no accounts — you hold the keys.
Choose KeePassXC if: You don’t trust the cloud with your passwords.
Both Are Excellent
Both are open-source, independently audited, and free. The choice comes down to convenience (Bitwarden) vs total control (KeePassXC). You can’t go wrong with either.
